Unwanted Dog Behavior – Eating Dirt
Anyone that has wisely chosen to have a dog for a pet would know that these animals are addicting. The outstanding qualities of dogs encourage people to have more than one dog for a pet. Dogs’ loyalty and affection to the human family is what made these animals gain the title of being man’s best friends. After domestication, dogs became the affectionate and loyal pets of man. Even with the long years of association, humans would still be puzzled by some of the habits of these wonderful animals. Pet owners are perplexed by the dog’s dirt eating habit. An interesting question then is; why do dogs eat dirt?
Dog owners must understand the reasons why the pet is eating dirt as this habit can have harmful repercussions on the health of the dog. Dogs owners take measures to save the dog from parvovirus because this is a fatal canine disease. The Parvovirus is highly contagious as the virus shed by an infected dog through the feces can be transmitted to a dog that eats dirt.
Whipworm infestation is another dangerous consequence of the dog‘s dirt eating habit. Poisoning is a very dangerous consequence of this behavior given the fact that dirt can be contaminated with anti freeze and other toxic substances. Because of these dangers to the pet’s life, it is very necessary for a dog owner to know why the pet has a partiality for dirt.
Dogs have huge appetites and one that is not given sufficient amount of food can eat dirt to satisfy the gnawing of the stomach. However, because dogs are pampered pets, dog owners ensure that the pet would never go hungry. What would be a more valid theory is that dogs are inclined to eat anything. Eating non-food items is known as pica. Pica can be associated with a behavioral concern. Dogs are social animals and habitually being left alone can be the reason for the unacceptable behavior. Boredom is one of the reasons why a dog will eat dirt.
The pet that eats dirt may be suffering from a gastrointestinal concern or from a nutritional deficiency. Eating indiscretion is a reason why the dogs has stomach upsets. Dogs that are given low quality commercial food may have sodium, iron or other mineral deficiencies. Dogs though have the ability to “diagnose” and to correct any imbalance in their system. Dog experts believe that by eating dirt the dog can cope with the vitamins and mineral deficiencies. Needless to say, the dirt eating habit must be curbed because of its dangerous effects. The habit can be a wakeup call for the dog owner to devote more attention to the well being of the pet.
