If you have just purchased or adopted your puppy, one of the most basic puppies training tips you need to know is how to potty train your puppy. Forget about training your new puppy to obey your commands such as ‘sit’ and ‘fetch’ at this point in time. Why? Because if you do not want to return home everyday to clean up your puppy’s mess, then you better ensure that you apply whatever potty training puppy tips you have learnt from day one!

Before your puppy is effective potty trained, make sure you keep it away from your carpet and other wooden furniture. Only when it is able to eliminate its waste in the designated area do you allow it more freedom to roam your house. If you are wondering how long it will take for your puppy to be effective potty trained, it depends on the breed of your puppy. I have personally heard of puppies which take up to 3 months to be well trained but my own puppies took less than 1 month, so it all depends. Using the potty training puppy tips below will also help you to train your puppy more effectively and quickly. They are the exact tips I used when I trained my puppies.

1. Suitable venue

When you first bring your new puppy home, it will not know where it is supposed to dispose its waste. It is important that you decide on the puppy toilet right from the start for the simple reason that you cannot re-train it to use a different toilet after some time! Preferably, the toilet should be somewhere outdoors. If that cannot be done, train your puppy to use the same toilet that you use. However, if you decide to train your puppy to potty on newspapers, then you run the risk of it eliminating its waste on any newspapers that you might have accidentally left lying around in your house!

2. Consistent training

By consistent training, I’m referring to not changing the ‘toilet’ and also to check on your puppy every time it needs to potty. At the beginning, you need to check your puppy each time it dispose its waste. If it make a mistake, do not get angry with it or hit it. You can give it a light tap on its bottom and bring it to the correct potty immediately. Only then will it realize that it has made a mistake and learn the correct potty place.

Thus, for faster effect in potty training your puppy, you should be at home at all times during the first few months. A puppy is like a very young child; you cannot correct its mistake if you only find out about it a few hours later. Only by correcting it immediately can you see better results.

3. Best timing for the training

The best time to carry out potty training for your puppy is right after its meals. Thus if you are home, you can take your potty outdoors or to the toilet after its meals in the morning and at night. It is vital to leave a bowl of water for it all day long but you should remove the dish of food after your puppy had its fill during its meal times. You should make it a point to feed your puppy at the same time every day so that it has a proper routine. It will also learn to anticipate potty times as after meal times.

4. Positive re-enforcement

I should say that this is the most important potty training puppy tip of all because your puppy will grow up to be a happy and healthy dog only if it has lots of positive re-enforcements. Shower your puppy with lots of love and be very patient with it. Be prepared that there will be accidents but do not get angry or spank it. Instead, reward it with lots of praises when it manages to potty at the correct place. Do not expect to get results overnight or even for the first few months.

Dog Potty Training Keeps Your German Shepherd From Mess

When can you start dog potty training?  Your dog starts learning at the very moment you first meet him as your puppy.  It is easiest for you to do the training while he is still a young puppy.  As he becomes older, he will least likely to mess in the home by undergoing puppy potty training.

It is best to remember staying totally consistent and calm at all times with your techniques.  Timing is your key to success.  After taking in food or water, puppies pee or poop out within 15 or 20 minutes.  For that moment, take him where you want him to be.

Feed him or give him water only when you can take him outside immediately.  Feeding at regular times should be established.  It does not work if other than his regular meal times, he is allowed to feed.  This feeding pattern helps to start his natural toilet pattern also.   Your puppy drinks more than usual in warm, hot or dry weather or climate.  Provide him access to fresh water and to his toilet area more frequently.

As soon as possible, establish good habits without expecting immediate results.  A toilet area must be decided for him.  You have to stay with him outside until he’s done, at least once every hour at the start of training.   Never leave him alone outside.  Your puppy must be able to distinguish an acceptable are especially if it is a home toilet area.  It should not resemble the flooring.

Never yell or punish him physically if he does pee or poop where you don’t want him to.  You must realize that it is not time to talk to him about it.  Just quietly clean it up and ignore him.

It is not always fun to do potty training, particularly the waiting for him to go.  As you are building a relationship while teaching him his first lessons, keep him with you as much as possible when you are both at home. Whether it means being at your side, in a confined area, in a crate or just nearby, be sure that you are not distracted from watching him every moment.  Be patient as you take time to consider how the world must be for him.

The fun of being outside ends abruptly if you take him back inside the house right away when he is done.  When he succeeds in your dog potty training, give him lots of praise.

The importance of toilet training is derived from the fact that you are completely unaware of where, or when, your dog with decide to relieve himself. For dogs, going somewhere appropriate to do their business is not in their nature, as opposed to swimming, which they do instinctively. Dogs need to be instructed to hold themselves until they reach a determined spot in the house for their excrement. It is common behavior for dogs to assign themselves one or two spots around the house where they will be most comfortable going about their business. This determination will be based on a few factors. The assigned spot will not be too close to where they sleep, however, it won’t be too far away either. Dogs will become lazy with age and get comfortable with a spot just around the corner from their bed.

Consistency is key when it comes to toilet training. For this reason, carrying it out can become tedious. Teaching your dog to behave differently will require the owner to be around every time he deviates, in order to correct him. Thus, if the owner is not around, or willing and able to provide the proper guidance when needed, the lesson can turn out to be longer than expected.

The first step is to determine where the special place will be where your dog will defecate. Make sure you are consistent with the spot, and place clean newspaper over it. Also, confirm that your dog has access to this place at all times. A good idea when choosing the spot would also be to place it away from where he sleeps. Most dogs are reluctant to do their business next to their bed.

Over time, your dog will look around the house for a toilet stop. When he does, you will notice he becomes a regular at the same place. When he misses your spot, carry him towards the newspaper, in an effort to show him where he needs to go. Try to place enough newspaper for a big enough area until your dog gets accustomed to doing his business on top of the paper. Once he does, begin reducing this area, by removing newspaper that is furthest away from your desired spot. Perform this action repeatedly, until you are left with only the desired space.

Make sure to always provide a space for your dog where he can go. If using newspaper, make sure you change it often, or he might be unwilling to go there again. If you are training your dog to go outside, the pet owner must be alert at all times and be available to open the door, or motivate his dog to go outside if showing evident urges.

Remember to be patient and considerate with your dog. Refrain from physically tormenting your dog, since this activity will not yield any positive results. You will end up hurting your relationship with your dog, and he will remain clueless as to why you torment him.
