Potty Training Puppy

By Mak Stella

If you have just purchased or adopted your puppy, one of the most basic puppies training tips you need to know is how to potty train your puppy. Forget about training your new puppy to obey your commands such as ‘sit’ and ‘fetch’ at this point in time. Why? Because if you do not want to return home everyday to clean up your puppy’s mess, then you better ensure that you apply whatever potty training puppy tips you have learnt from day one!

Before your puppy is effective potty trained, make sure you keep it away from your carpet and other wooden furniture. Only when it is able to eliminate its waste in the designated area do you allow it more freedom to roam your house. If you are wondering how long it will take for your puppy to be effective potty trained, it depends on the breed of your puppy. I have personally heard of puppies which take up to 3 months to be well trained but my own puppies took less than 1 month, so it all depends. Using the potty training puppy tips below will also help you to train your puppy more effectively and quickly. They are the exact tips I used when I trained my puppies.

1. Suitable venue

When you first bring your new puppy home, it will not know where it is supposed to dispose its waste. It is important that you decide on the puppy toilet right from the start for the simple reason that you cannot re-train it to use a different toilet after some time! Preferably, the toilet should be somewhere outdoors. If that cannot be done, train your puppy to use the same toilet that you use. However, if you decide to train your puppy to potty on newspapers, then you run the risk of it eliminating its waste on any newspapers that you might have accidentally left lying around in your house!

2. Consistent training

By consistent training, I’m referring to not changing the ‘toilet’ and also to check on your puppy every time it needs to potty. At the beginning, you need to check your puppy each time it dispose its waste. If it make a mistake, do not get angry with it or hit it. You can give it a light tap on its bottom and bring it to the correct potty immediately. Only then will it realize that it has made a mistake and learn the correct potty place.

Thus, for faster effect in potty training your puppy, you should be at home at all times during the first few months. A puppy is like a very young child; you cannot correct its mistake if you only find out about it a few hours later. Only by correcting it immediately can you see better results.

3. Best timing for the training

The best time to carry out potty training for your puppy is right after its meals. Thus if you are home, you can take your potty outdoors or to the toilet after its meals in the morning and at night. It is vital to leave a bowl of water for it all day long but you should remove the dish of food after your puppy had its fill during its meal times. You should make it a point to feed your puppy at the same time every day so that it has a proper routine. It will also learn to anticipate potty times as after meal times.

4. Positive re-enforcement

I should say that this is the most important potty training puppy tip of all because your puppy will grow up to be a happy and healthy dog only if it has lots of positive re-enforcements. Shower your puppy with lots of love and be very patient with it. Be prepared that there will be accidents but do not get angry or spank it. Instead, reward it with lots of praises when it manages to potty at the correct place. Do not expect to get results overnight or even for the first few months.

If you apply the above potty training puppy tips, you will be able to get your desired results over time but you need to be very patient and loving. Once your puppy is well-trained, you will have a very clean pet whose company you can get to enjoy for life so it is well worth the time and patience you put in now. Have fun!

Dog Training – Bad Dogma, How Harsh Training Methods Can Cause Aggression

By Eric Letendre

The dictionary defines the word dogma as: The established belief or doctrine held by a religion, ideology or any kind of organization, thought to be authoritative and not to be disputed, doubted or diverged from.

There is an old saying among dog trainers that goes: “The only thing two dog trainers can agree on is what the third one is doing wrong.”

There are basically two schools of dog trainers. On one side you have the old school dog trainers that believe training is done by using a choke chain or prong collar to train, that you should never use food to train the dog.

On the other hand you have the food reward trainers that believe you should never use any kind of force or harsh methods to train.

Both sides will strongly argue for their way of training. I have been on both sides of the issue. I got my start training dogs with an old time trainer that had been training dogs since the 1950’s. If you used a treat in front of this guy, you had to be prepared for a verbal eruption that would make a sailor blush.

I have also been with trainers that think anything short of filet mignon not being used for treats is cruel. All kidding aside it can get confusing for someone trying to train their dog. Who do you listen to? Should you just use treats to train? Do you ever give your dog a correction?

The truth of the matter is that positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement can be extremely effective. There is no denying that there are thousands of dogs that are safely confined to their yards with the help of underground electronic fences.

There is also no denying that dogs learn much better when you use a reward based system of training. The important point is this: You want to make sure that you spend more time rewarding your dog’s behavior than punishing or getting physical with your dog.

The fact is that all good relationships are based on positive interaction. I once watched a group obedience class where all the dogs were on choke chains. Food was not allowed. In the course of one hour, I watched one guy give his dog over 150 corrections with the leash. They weren’t all hard corrections but he did yank on the leash that many times.

Over time, that dog will become tolerant to the choke chain and the owner will have to yank harder and harder and will probably damage his dog’s neck and trachea which will lead to one very grouchy dog. There’s no denying the fact that a dog being trained that way can easily develop an aggression problem, and here’s the rub. The dog is always blamed, never the training method Doesn’t it make sense to use a reward based training system?

Unfortunaly this way of training has become the established belief or doctrine held by many dog trainers, and not to be disputed, doubted or diverged from.

Too bad for the dogs.

This is the place where they can escape to, when they are needing themselves a little bit of a nap. This type of dog training is really one of the least expensive ways that you can train your little friend. Toilet Training

By Eric Letendre

Seems like I spent most of the week helping new puppy owners housetrain their pups. Housetraining can be accomplished in as little as ten days if you follow a plan, a plan that has worked for many dog owners. The closer you follow the plan, the better the results.

Step 1: Understand dog behavior – dogs do not know right from wrong. What they understand is safe and dangerous. When your puppy comes into your house he doesn’t understand that it is “bad” behavior to urinate on your carpet.

We want to teach your dog that going in the house is unacceptable. We do this by catching your dog in the act – not after the behavior has occurred but while the behavior is happening. Punishing your dog after the behavior has occurred can confuse your dog, making the housetraining process much more difficult.

Step 2: Understand your dog’s digestive system – A dog’s digestive system is much shorter than a humans. We have about 26 feet of intestines; a dog has about 8 feet, so the whole process is going to happen much faster. It is also important to remember that what goes in must come out.

Some dog food companies recommend feeding a puppy four times a day. That can make the housetraining process very, very difficult on the puppy and the owner. I have always fed my puppies twice a day. You can meet all of their nutritional requirements and make it much easier to housetrain on this feeding schedule, which leads us to step 3…

Step 3: Develop a schedule – Putting your dog on a feeding schedule during the housetraining process can make your efforts much more successful. A dog or puppy that is allowed to eat whenever she wants will make housetraining very difficult. Also, developing a schedule to take your dog outside will make it easier on you. I always bring a dog outside within 15 to 20 minutes after meals.

Step 4: Manage your dog’s behavior – One of the most important steps in the housetraining process is the proper management of your dog’s behavior. In step 1 we discussed catching your dog in the act, not after the fact. Using a crate can help you when you are too busy to watch your pup.

Most pups and dogs will not eliminate in their crate. When you need to go to work or have to leave the house for a while, you can put your pup in her crate. When you come home, you can immediately take her outside and not give her the opportunity to make a mistake in the house.

Using a crate is excellent for young dogs. At some point in your dog’s life he will probably have to go into a crate. The vet, travel, and grooming visits all require your dog to go into a crate. It is better to get him used to one while he is young. I also recommend crates because as a former animal control officer, I have seen plenty of young dogs that became injured – some seriously – because they were allowed too much freedom while unattended.

Step 5: Influence your dog’s behavior – Just as you need to catch your dog in the act, you also need to let your dog know that she is doing the right behavior. During the housetraining process it is a good idea to take your dog out on leash. If you let your dog out into a fenced in area and you are not there, you will not be able to communicate to your dog that she is doing the right behavior.

When your pup needs to go out, put your pup on leash and as she is sniffing the ground say a command like, “get busy” or “do your business,” and keep saying that until your pup starts to go. Once she starts, don’t say anything else. Once your pup is finished, praise and reward her immediately.

Step 6: Proper clean up – When I am helping someone housetrain their pup, one of the first questions I ask is “What are you cleaning up the mess with?” A lot of people get commercial cleaners at the supermarket. A lot of these products contain ammonia. Ammonia smells like urine to your dog. So if your dog urinates on the carpet and you clean with an ammonia product, your dog will come back to that spot and think that a strange dog has gone on the carpet. Your dog will eliminate again on that same spot to cover it.

Nature’s Miracle is an excellent product that has enzymes to break down the scent of urine naturally.

Step 7: Get everyone involved – if you live by yourself with your dog this step will be easy. If your dog lives in a house with more than one person, make sure that everyone is taking the steps to make the housetraining process quick and easy. The closer everyone sticks to the plan, the faster the training will progress.

Conclusion – Dog training really boils down to timing, consistency, and motivation. When we are housetraining a dog, we need to make sure that our timing is good – catching your dog in the act. We need to make sure that we are consistent with the training – same feeding schedule, outside schedule, and everyone in the house is on the same page. Motivation is rewarding your dog for going outside and startling your dog when they start to eliminate in the house.
