Puppy Training: Housebreaking Your Puppy

By Paul Schmitt

Who would of thought puppy training would be so taxing? It doesn’t have to be difficult. With a few minor changes, you can easily housebreak your puppy.

Puppy training begins with housebreaking. Purchase a crate that is the right size for your puppy. Don’t fall for “bigger is better” because it isn’t. The crate must be suited for the breed of your dog.

- Use a dog crate that allows enough room for a mature breed.

- Purchase wetting pads to line half of the cage.

- Place the crate where the puppy can easily access it.

- Leave the door open during the day so the puppy can go in and out of it.

- Spend a little extra money to get a good quality crate.

Use the crate when you leave the home. Place your new puppy inside with a bowl of water and chew toy. The puppy will no eliminate where he sleeps. Make sure you put the wetting pad to one side of the crate. If your pup was purchased from a Pet Store, he may already be crate trained.

The minute you arrive home, take the puppy outside. Praise him when he eliminates and reward him with a treat for being a good pup. This will reinforce good behavior. Spend some time playing with him as well.

The crate should also be used at night. He will whine for the first few nights, but that is normal. Don’t go to him or you will destroy your efforts in crate training him.

Housetraining your puppy will work best if you reinforce good behavior. Breeders and veterinarians will continuously tell dog owners that the only way to break bad habits is education and consistency.

Puppy Training – Good Doggie

By Maisy Day

Puppies are cute cuddly and so full of life throughout the infancy stage. It is at this time when puppy training is vital – because believe it or not these cute cuddly little characters can cause so much havoc in the home – with their outbursts of action packed antics all brought on by excitement.

Fun it may be at the time but when you waken to find the remains of a chewed slipper- scratch marks on the furniture and puppy poo to mark the pup`s presence then it is time for an obedience check

How do you go about house training a puppy – simple the same as you would potty train a baby? Yes your right it will take time and patience but all worthwhile in the end.

To be honest the whole process of puppy training can be quite fulfilling as well as fun. There will be times when you may get frustrated throughout the process but just the fact that you have accomplished what others would see as impossible is an achievement in its self. To have an obedient dog standing at the side of its master (you) will make you proud to be the canines owner. Even evening walks are so much more enjoyable with an obedient dog.

You have to think about safety for yourself and that of your pooch if they are not trained. Dangers by the roadside and where children are concerned – have to be a couple of vital factors why puppy training is important.

Puppies need to use the bathroom regular sometimes as much as up to 8 to 10 visits a day – this gradually lessons to about 3 to four times at 30 weeks old.

Our little four legged friends are clean animals but still need nurturing with correction lessons teaching them right from wrong.

If you are going to kennel/crate train the puppy then build the shelter to accommodate the size of the dog to have comfort. Section the kennel in half while the puppy is small and as he/she begins to grow then remove the partition. By not splitting the shelter in two the pup may decide to go to the back of the crate and leave their mark there.

The kennel/crate should be big enough to permit the dog to stand easily and stretch. As long as the dog can manoeuvre around then that is all that matters.

Timing is crucial when puppy training – have a doggie diary with a schedule of times and adhere to them. Work this pattern around what is best suited for you and your dog.

For example: 10 to 10:30 am. lead the puppy from the enclosure outside and always keep to the same spot every day. The puppy will get used to this allotted space and in time will make his or her own way there. Remember puppies are like babies they need feeding. Times for this is best after the first morning release – approx about 30 minutes. A little later let the puppy out for a friendly romp in the garden for a play without commands.

Leading the puppy from the kennel is an action you have to repeat over and over again at the scheduled times you have logged in your doggie diary.

Before retiring to blanket street take the puppy outside again and let them have a little time to investigate and nosey around – in other words sniffing every nook and cranny.

If you are serious with this practice then the puppy`s needs have to be checked again around 3 am in the morning. It is a good idea to have a catchphrase for the pup to relate to. Words like (want to poo poo) will do the trick.

When your puppy is at your side and obeying your commands it is then you will know why that famous saying came about – GOOD DOGGIE.

Teaching and Training Your Puppy

By Steve Marcs

When the owner first starts training the puppy it seems hard when first starting, but as time passes it gets easier for both. The constant giving of commands to the little puppy seems cruel, because it seems like you are yelling at the dog. The entire purpose of getting your puppy trained is to teach them how to obey commands and perform the commands on queue when asking the dog to do something.

When the puppy first comes home it might growl at strangers, bark or cry all the time and even chew on furniture, this is all normal, but to stop the dog from doing these types of acts you need to train it. There are professionals who train dogs in dog training schools, they cost for this type of training is expensive but it is worth it because a professional is training the dog.

You might think its easy training your new puppy, then you realize it is harder than you thought, you become aggravated, don’t let this stop your training. One great method of training your puppy is to crate it; this is not a cruel method but a widely accepted method of training. When looking for a leash, make sure the leash is not a retractable leash. This type of leash you will lose all control over the puppy, get a short leash to show the dog you are the boss.

Start training your dog right away this is one of the best ways to begin. Waiting to train your dog will create bad habits; by training the puppy early you can teach it good habits. Using the same commands each time is very important; this reinforces the tasks the dog needs to do.

Some many places offer some type of training classes, kennels and pet stores do, and one of the best ways to find a great trainer is by referrals from someone you know and having the trainer train your puppy alone with no other animals. Many classes or trainers provide some type of guarantee; if your dog needs reinforcement just let them know.

Training is not just for the dog it is also for the dog owner. When training your dog and having it obey your commands will open a line of communication between the puppy and you. The time period that works the best when training your new puppy is before six months, this is the optimum time.

During the early stages of your puppy you will be shaping the character, the behavior, temperament and the habits of your dog, so training early on is very important because you do not want your dog to pick up bad habits. Everyone wants their puppy to succeed with their training, so reinforcing good habits and stopping the bad habits and behavior is a must.

Getting your puppy in the right direction is important, you don’t want to battle with your dog later on and try to change bad habits. Training does not have to happen overnight, start off with simple commands and then build on these commands, continue to with the everyday, repetition is the key to success.

Puppy Training And Socialization

By Bob J. Westhoven

Congratulations you just got a new puppy! Are you ready to get started training him? While there are many aspects to training a puppy, the most important is socialization. There are two types of socialization. The first one is socializing your dog to be comfortable around people. The second form of socialization is teaching your dog to act like a dog and act appropriately around other dogs and other pets.

Dogs that are not properly socialized around people can still act appropriately around their family or human pack. A dog that is not properly socialized around people may become aggressive or scared when strangers enter the home. Some dogs will hide under the bed while others will not stop barking. You may think that having your dog be aggressive toward strangers may be a good way to protect your home, but when that stranger is your neighbour’s five year old child this can be the start of a law suit. A dog that is well socialized is a pleasure when company comes over as well as when you take him or her to the park.

To social your dogs with humans start the training as soon as possible. Be sure to bring people of many ages over to your house and have them greet the dog. Be sure the dog is praised, but not allowed to jump up on the company or other undesirable behaviours. The next thing is to take your dog on regular walks. This way it will see people on the street and not becomes overly excited. While this does not need to be done everyday make sure your puppy has interactions with humans on a regular basis.

It is important to socialize your puppy with other dogs so it learns how to be a dog. Dogs that are not socialized as dogs are often attacked by other dogs because they do not behave properly or your dog will become the aggressor. Your dog may simply be afraid of other dogs and cower when confronted with a member of its own species.

To socialize your dog it needs to interact with other dogs. This often does not occur in homes with only one dog. Try to get your dog to interact with other dogs in your neighborhood by going to your local dog park and playing freely with the other dogs. First, you need to be careful that there are no aggressive dogs in the park. Doggie dates are a fun way to visit with your friends and give your dog a chance to be a dog. Another opportunity is pet stores that allow you to bring your dog while you shop. If you have a cat or another animal in the house, a puppy is your best chance at making sure they will get a long. A puppy is more likely to see a cat as a member of the the family than an older dog that has had no experience with the new animal.

A well socialized dog will not only make your home a more inviting place, but will make the dog happier also.
